It’s not exactly clear where Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie stand these days, but their split is apparently providing great musical inspiration.
As Gossip Cop reported, Duff and Comrie announced their separation in January, and have been frequently seen spending time together while denying any official reconciliation.
On Thursday’s Billboard Pop Shop podcast, Duff didn’t clarify the state of their relationship, but did reveal that her new album will explore some of her mixed feelings.
“I’m separated from my husband right now, which has been a very difficult thing to go through, but we have a lot of love for each other and we have this beautiful baby,” the actress-singer said, referring to their 2-year-old son Luca.
Duff went on to share, “‘[There's] a song about Luca and a song about my separation and my love for this person, that maybe we’re not meant to be together, or maybe we are.”
Calling the track “very, very personal,” Duff further said that her music became “a lot heavier and darker” following her split from Comrie.
“I think I just needed to get that out,” she said. “And once I did get that out, a lot of fun came [in other songs].”
Duff actually credited her pregnancy with bringing about her return to music after a years-long hiatus.
“I was about to give birth, I was actually pregnant, and I had, like, two months to go – I was just like a house walking around –- and I just started writing a lot out of nowhere,” she recalled.
Duff continued, “I don’t know if it was because I was all hormonal and emotional, but I started writing and I kind of took it as a sign like I’m missing that part of my life.”
The star has not yet officially announced her new record, but she premiered the music video for the first single, “Chasing the Sun,” earlier this week.
