(Cleveland) - The big salt mine under Lake Erie off of Cleveland has been temporarialy shut down. That's because Cargill, the mine's operator, has detected a slight geological shift in the mine, and shut down as a safety precaution.

The tunnel affected was mined out several years ago and Cargill spokesman Mark Klein says they have brought in additional equipment and engineering and geology consultants to determine the cause of the shift.

The movement in the mine is undetectable to the eye, but they still need to find out a cause for the movement.

Klein says the continually measure the mines in one-one hundreds of an inch. The mine is 18-hundred feet below lake erie, and about four miles offshore.
