(Avon Lake) - You may have noticed the many sunflowers planted along I-90 in Avon.

Ed and Megan McNamara, along with help from friends and volunteers, planted a mile long field of sunflowers in honor of their daughter Maria, who died from a rare form of brain cancer in 2007.

Ed McNamara told Newsradio WTAM 1100, he and his wife started a foundation called Prayers for Maria, which funds research into childhood cancers.

Thousands of motorists see the sunflowers every day, and McNamara hopes it will remind them to make a pledge at PrayersforMaria.org.

Motorists frequently stop to take pictures of the sunflower field, which came into bloom about a week ago.

McNamara said they chose the sunflower because it is a symbol of hope.

On Saturday, the public is invited to enter through Jaycox Road, and walk among the sunflowers between 4pm and 5pm.

Prizes will be offered for the best sunflower pictures, and the foundation will announce the winner of a $250,000 research grant.
