After spending the first 257 days of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit of HCA Florida Brandon Hospital in Brandon, Florida, John Delancey III was finally discharged last week. Born at just 22 weeks last June, he weighed only slightly over 1 pound at birth and was considered a micropremie. Over more than eight months, he grew into a 17-pound, 3.5-ounce infant with the care of nurses, physicians, and therapists.
Dr. Kiran Dwarakanath, NICU medical director, says it takes extraordinary teamwork to care for a baby born this early, and John showed determination throughout his stay. Hospital staff members supported him through daily medical challenges. His care required coordinated efforts from a multidisciplinary team over the course of his hospitalization.
To mark the milestone, hospital staff celebrated with a graduation walk, cheering his exit and offering heartfelt goodbyes. The hospital shared his journey on social media as he prepared to return home with his family.
