Last Wednesday, a group of Mississippi middle school students acted quickly to prevent a school bus crash after their driver experienced a medical emergency. Driver Leah Taylor was behind the wheel when she blacked out from an asthma attack while transporting about 40 students to Hancock Middle School, prompting 12-year-old Jackson Casnave to take control of the steering as the bus began to swerve.
The students worked together, with Darrius Clark applying the brakes to bring the bus to a stop on a highway median, while Kayleigh Clark called 911. Other classmates, including Destiny Cornelius and McKenzy Finch, assisted the driver by administering her medication and contacting school officials.
Emergency responders arrived moments later and took over care. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident and Taylor later made a full recovery. School officials praised the students’ heroic actions during the incident. They were recognized at a school pep rally and are scheduled to attend a celebratory lunch in their honor.
