Last Thursday morning, a 35-year-old woman was kidnapped outside her home in McKinleyville, California, but was able to escape and hide inside a gas station bathroom in nearby Blue Lake. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office says she reached out to authorities around 4a.m. through a 911 call and text messages while hiding at a station off Highway 299. She was able to get away when the suspect stopped to refuel.
Deputies arrived at the scene and safely detained the suspect outside the gas station without incident. When additional officers entered, they found the woman still inside the restroom, where she had remained while waiting for help. Authorities were able to quickly secure the area and ensure her safety.
Following the investigation at the scene, the 46-year-old suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. He was booked on suspicion of kidnapping, violating a domestic violence court order, and violating probation.
