Last week, police in Pittsburgh were able to track down a sexual assault and burglary suspect using data from an Apple AirTag. Following the alleged assault, the victim noticed that an AirTag and some money were missing from her home. The AirTag later pinged at a nearby location, and when officers searched the area, they found the suspect and took him into custody.
The woman told police she woke up early Thursday morning after hearing a sound and realized someone was touching her indecently while she slept. She says the man then left her room and exited through a window, where police later recovered fingerprints that investigators were able to match to the suspect. The AirTag’s location data helped police narrow the search area.
The suspect admitted to entering the home looking for money and items to salvage and to assaulting the woman. Police also have security footage showing someone attempting to break into multiple nearby homes. The alleged assailant is being held in Allegheny County Jail without bail while facing multiple felony charges.
