Mexico’s World Cup-opening win over South Africa sparked plenty of excitement, but a duck named Merlin unexpectedly became the tournament’s breakout star.
Dressed in Mexico’s national team colors, the 2-year-old duck went viral after photos of him celebrating with fans in Mexico City spread across social media.
Locals already knew Merlin, who regularly accompanies owner Carla Gómez as she sells drinks around the city and has become a favorite photo subject.
Following his rise to fame, Merlin met with FIFA reps on Monday to shoot photos and a commercial.
