A 79-year-old retired nurse in Ohio recently received unexpected help from members of her community after concerns about the condition of her yard led to legal trouble. Beverly Thomas says arthritis, tremors and a fixed income had made it difficult to maintain her property, and she became worried after learning that she could face jail time over the issue.
After a local television station shared her story, people from across Northeast Ohio began reaching out. The next morning, two strangers arrived at her door at the same time, including a local attorney who offered legal assistance and lawn care professional Norburt Sanek, who volunteered to organize a cleanup effort.
Sanek saw Thomas' story on social media and wanted to help, saying, "This is how I was brought up. You help neighbors, especially the elderly." Dozens of volunteers later expressed interest in assisting with yard work, debris removal, and taking down a large dead tree. "I'm touched that people care,” Thomas says, “I know they're out there, just didn't know how to reach them."
