Some Thanksgiving staples. such as turkey and mashed potatoes, will be on tables across the country this Thursday, but every family has their own way of doing their holiday meal. In a now-viral tweet, writer Maya Kosoff asked what weird, retro recipes they eat on Thanksgiving and the answers were quite entertaining, if not a little appalling.
Kosoff shared that her family eats something called "Seafoam salad" which is green and made with lime jello, canned pears, cream cheese and cool whip. A little strange perhaps, but it's really not that bad when you hear some of the others. Bologna "cake", which looks like a lovely layered cake, is made with bologna, ranch dressing, and Cheez Whiz, with green olives for garnish.
It appears that Jell-O and dairy-based "salads" are pretty common on Thanksgiving tables. Some use cream cheese, others cottage cheese, and even some use mayo. Another tweet reveals yet another uncommon dish: Thanksgiving "Succotash" - which is a can of corn, a can of beans, and a can of mushrooms. Despite the above mentioned dishes, the strangest of them all might just be the Magic Tomato Soup Cake someone's grandma used to make and if you think the name sounds awful, it gets worse - it's actually topped with a creamy chocolate frosting.
