While selling flowers by the Freeway in Los Angeles, street vendor Juan Diaz was brutally attacked and robbed. Fortunately, Gerardo Plascencia happened to be walking by and stepped in to fight off the attacker. Plascencia, who didn’t know Diaz, says he was just acting on instinct and later felt grateful that the attacker wasn’t armed.

Diaz expressed his gratitude for the good Samaritan’s help, especially since he still has limited mobility in one arm from an incident last year when he was brutally attacked and stabbed while selling flowers in the same area. That time, no one came to his aid. With the help of a local reporter, Diaz was able to talk to Plascencia, who he calls "the Cuban man," over the phone to thank him multiple times for his brave and selfless act.

Plascencia, who arrived in L.A. from Cuba earlier this year and is now living in a tent while he works odd jobs, humbly says that he helped out of the goodness of his heart. After the incident, Diaz, who says he’s been working since he was six years old and can’t imagine sitting at home and doing nothing, has resumed his work on the streets, only now with his daughter by his side to watch over him.
