After a video of a homeless musician playing guitar and singing went viral, donations from strangers are pouring in to help get him back on his feet.
Stephen Flynn first heard John Metcalfe performing his version of Dire Straits’ “Sultans of Swing” outside a McDonald’s drive-thru in England. He recorded and posted a video of it on TikTok and it’s gone viral with more than 11 million views.
After the massive response, Flynn went back the next day to find Metcalfe and show him the positive online reaction, and he says the musician was "gobsmacked" by all the "love.” As they talked, he learned about the Liverpool native’s life, that he’s lived in the Middle East, Spain and most recently, Norway, but he was deported last October over visa issues after living there with his girlfriend for five years. TikTokers took to the comments section to ask if there was a way to help or donate money to Metcalfe, so Flynn’s sister launched a GoFundMe and it’s raised nearly $10-thousand so far. The musician says he wants to use the money to buy a camper van so he and his girlfriend can travel around England and play music. "It's totally restored my faith in human nature," Metcalfe says of the response. "Even after all that's happened to me … it's just restored my faith."
