Fire broke out at a home in Rock Island, Illinois, shortly after midnight on Monday. Jared Morrissey was driving home from work when he saw flames coming from the garage, initially mistaking them for a bonfire. As he got closer though, he realized that it was an emergency and rushed to see if he could help.
Morrissey knocked repeatedly on the door until he woke the homeowner, who’d been sound asleep inside with her dog. He helped her and the dog safely get out of the house before calling 911. The good Samaritan describes his arrival as "just good timing," saying that it was “really fortunate” that he passed by at that exact moment and he doesn’t know what might have happened if he hadn’t gotten there when he did.
Firefighters arrived on the scene just after 1 a.m. and worked quickly to extinguish the flames. Morrissey says the homeowner was shaken but unharmed, saying, "Luckily, she’s fine. Her dog’s fine." He plans to check back in with her again later to see how she's doing.
