Just days after a viral TikTok captured Mykale Baker working at a Dacula, Georgia, Burger King immediately after his high school graduation, the fast food chain itself has stepped in to support the dedicated teen’s future. On Monday, Burger King and the Burger King Foundation surprised Baker at work with a $10,000 scholarship, a boost to the nearly $190,000 raised through a crowdfund launched by the customer who witnessed his now-famous shift.
The gesture came in response to the overwhelming public support for the teen, who’d stopped by his job after graduating from Mills Creek High School, still dressed in his cap, gown, and medals. Moved by his commitment, customer Maria Mendoza filmed the moment and launched the original fundraiser. In a touching twist, Burger King also awarded Mendoza’s daughter, fellow graduate Daizie Chavez, a matching $10-thousand scholarship to recognize their family's role in bringing Baker’s story to light.
Baker had been considering delaying college for financial reasons, but now plans to enroll this fall to study automotive technology. His story has resonated with people around the world, inspiring thousands of individual donations and now recognition from the company where the story began.
