An off-duty California firefighter is being praised for helping save a Cameron Park family after a fire broke out in their garage. On Tuesday morning, Cohl Weissmann and his brother were asleep when their smoke alarm went off. The house quickly filled with smoke, forcing them to rush outside with their cat. At the same time, their neighbor, Jamesley Giblin of Cal Fire AEU’s Ponderosa Fire Crew, was driving to work and saw the smoke.
He quickly stopped to check on the family and guided them to grab a hose to help fight the fire. He then used the garden hose himself to knock down the flames until other fire crews arrived on scene. Weissmann says he and his brother had been panicking but were grateful for the firefighter’s calm direction during the emergency.
Captain Ty Day of the Ponderosa Fire Center explains that the garage could have been fully engulfed in smoke within minutes and said Giblin’s actions likely kept the flames from spreading into the house. The family expressed deep gratitude for Giblin, calling him a hero.
