Pregnant Bus Driver Rescues Kids From School Bus Fire

Last week, a Milwaukee school bus driver was driving students to the Milwaukee Academy of Science when she noticed an unusual smell and started seeing smoke enter the bus. Williams, who is eight months pregnant, tried to contact dispatch, but the smoke was getting worse, so she rushed to protect the children.

She says her “mommy instincts kicked in” and she hurriedly got the more than 30 schoolkids off the bus. Only once all the children were safely off the bus did Williams escape. “I was the last person off,” she recalls. “Once I got off, I turned around and I just seen flames.”

Milwaukee Police confirmed all occupants safely exited the bus and that Williams was taken to a hospital as a precaution, though no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but isn't deemed suspicious. Despite suffering from smoke inhalation, Williams expressed relief that everyone was safe, saying, "Everyone's OK so that just makes me happy."
