Mom Saves Ump’s Life At Little League Playoff Game

Last week, surgical oncologist Dr. Jennifer LaFemina saved the life of a Little League umpire during her son's baseball game in Oxford, Massachusetts. A foul ball hit The home plate umpire in the neck and initially stayed in the game. However, LaFemina noticed troubling symptoms and convinced the ump to leave the field for his safety.

Towards the end of the game, the umpire collapsed and stopped breathing. LaFemina quickly began administering emergency care and instructed the Little League president to retrieve a defibrillator. With the help of her medical assistant, Emily Lutfy, they performed six rounds of CPR to restart the umpire's heart before paramedics arrived and rushed him to the hospital. He’s now recovering and breathing on his own.

For her heroic actions, Dr. LaFemina received a life-saving merit award from the Oxford Board of Selectmen. During the award ceremony, she stressed the importance of teamwork and expressed gratitude for the quick assistance she received. She also said she hopes that the umpire, who’d been kind to her son earlier in the game, will be able to return to the field soon.
