Bus Driver Saves Toddler Wandering Alone On Busy Street

A few weeks ago, MTA bus driver Peter Warner noticed a young boy running down the middle of a busy Staten Island street with an iPad in his hand, wearing only a diaper and a tank top, and no shoes. Recognizing the imminent danger the boy faced, Warner stopped his bus, blocked the intersection, and brought him onto his bus. This quick decision very likely saved the child’s life, as the intersection the boy was about to run through is known for heavy traffic.

Warner, who’s been a bus driver for 13 years, called his union representative and 911 after making sure the boy was safe. Unable to speak, the child was comforted by Warner, who’s a father of two. Police soon arrived on the scene, but before they took the boy away, he wanted one more hug from his rescuer.

Authorities soon learned that the boy had wandered four blocks from home while his father was asleep and his mother was at work. The mother later expressed her gratitude to Warner, leading to a new friendship. She now regularly interacts with the bus driver on social media, commenting on photos of his children. Warner’s instincts and compassion led to a positive outcome and a new friendship in what could easily have been a tragic situation.
